Nigerian impact and solo traveller, Omotoke Fatoki, has etched her name in history as the first woman to solo backpack across all 36 states of Nigeria by road.

Omotoke who is also known as Alarinka has deep love for travel, culture, and reshaping the narrative of Nigeria which inspired her adventure in 2019 where she covered over 500 local government areas over the course of a year.

Her aim was to showcase the kindness of Nigerians, combat tribalism, and educate the world about the beauty and diversity of the country while working towards changing the negative narrative of unsafe Nigeria across the globe.

Omotoke’s solo backpacking adventure shattered stereotypes and defied perceptions of insecurity in Nigeria as she documented the kindness and generosity of strangers who supported her irrespective of her background.

Her story and journey wasn’t just about reaching a destination; it was about the profound experiences and connections made along the way which inspired thousands of people to travel within Nigeria, break down tribal barriers, and embrace the concept of a unified nation.

Omotoke who completed this remarkable feat on International Women’s Day in 2019 is a symbol of courage, resilience, and the power of travel to bridge divides and foster understanding.

Her unwavering commitment to showcasing the beauty of Nigeria and creating positive change has been recognised by BBC Africa, Channels TV, Genevieve Magazine, and numerous other media outlets.

The Nigerian Tourism Promoter has also been honoured with prestigious awards such as Rising Star at the Pyne Awards, Tourism Personality of the Year at the Balearica Awards, Tourism Promoter of the Year (2020-2023), and Ambassador for Youth in Tourism, among others.

Omotoke leveraged her travels to inspire other adventurers to travel with purpose, resulting in donations and contributions to the community of Makoko. This modest initiative has yielded remarkable results, including the construction of five classrooms, scholarships for 30 children, provision of water for a remote island, and organising tours for children from slums across three states in Nigeria.

She also founded the Alarinka travel community & Impact Adventurers.

As an impact adventurer, Omotoke will soon be backpacking on another journey and we wish her the best as she’s an inspiration to aspiring travellers, especially young women, demonstrating that adventure knows no bounds.
