Many young Nigerians are no longer waiting for the government to create employment for them as they are now taking their destinies into their own hands, Joy Alofokhai is one of them.

Speaking with Muse.ng, the young lady who is into freelance writing said LinkedIn has helped her close so many deals she wouldn’t have been qualified for.

In her words: “LinkedIn has helped me close so many deals I wouldn’t have qualified for if I had applied for the job.”

The graduate of Ambrose Alli University who started freelancing in March said the journey hasn’t been without challenges, adding that there was a time she wrote a 3,000-word article for just $5.

In her words: “Someone reached out to me today asking about how much I usually charge for a 500 words article.

“I told her 15$, then she was like, she wants to be like me one day.

“She told me that she usually writes 1k words for 5$ then I laughed.”

Joy Alofokhai said she has met with clients who scammed her.

Joy recalled her first viral post on LinkedIn where she celebrated the first job she got on Upwork.

She said: “I was celebrating a 5$ to write 3k words article job.”

The young lady said she used to laugh at herself whenever she reads that LinkedIn post, adding that it was all part of the process.

In her words: “I believe that post opened so many doors for me when I started my visibility journey.”

Other challenges she faced included doing free or little pay jobs, having to meet clients who never get satisfied with her work.

Joy, who said she has also met clients who scammed her, noted that there were times she thought of quitting but forged ahead.

She advised freelance writers who believe they are in the wrong field because they are getting little or no gigs to keep trying instead of quitting.

In her words: “If they are still new to the field, they should volunteer to work for an organisation.

Joy said if she wasn’t a freelance writer, she would be a web developer.
