Out of over 400 students in her class, Olajumoke Sorungbe is the only student that graduated with a first class, and she has disclosed to Muse.ng how she achieved this academic feat.
The young lady recent graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Lagos.
“It’s mind-blowing”
Olajumoke described her academic achievement as mind-blowing due to all she received as a result of it.
In her words: “It’s mind-blowing because of the wishes, the paparazzi, the monetary and non-monetary presents, and the people I’ve met and connected with as a result.
“It’s even more sentimental when I see how happy my parents, family, and friends are. It’s encouraging since it indicates my abilities and intellect in some manner.”
She couldn’t believe it at first
Olajumoke said her academic feat seemed unbelievable at first due to the fact that there were over 400 students in her class, many of whom also worked hard.
In her words: “It seemed unbelievable at first, I think about the fact that we were over 400 students in my class, many of whom worked quite hard.
“I know that some students worked much harder than I did. However, it wasn’t coincidence that I’m the only first class graduate. It is gratifying that I put in a lot of effort and that my efforts were recognised.”
What did she do differently?
According to Olajumoke, she can’t particularly say what she did differently as she never saw her script and didn’t know what the marking guide was.
She said: “What I do know however is that I pushed myself, I pushed myself to the point where I would feel that I had done my best and there was nothing more to do.
“I also made sure that I worked smart as opposed to working hard, and this meant that I paid a lot of attention to seemingly insignificant details.”
Having the complete university experience
Olajumoke said despite the stereotype that smart people should only be smart and nothing more, she had a social life in school and the complete university experience.
In her words: “I think there’s a general stereotype that smart people should only be smart and nothing more, and this is why we’re not expected to have a social life. I have a thriving social life. I went out, had fun and made friends. I like to think that I had the complete university experience, the whole package.”
Distractions in school
According to Olajumoke, she had distractions in school but was able to manage them while reaching for her set goals.
She said: “I knew when I could afford to allow myself get distracted and when I couldn’t. I tried to manage and apportion time for different activities, so i knew when i could afford to watch a movie, go out to a nice restaurant or gist with friends.”
Olajumoke’s awards
The young lady won many awards for her academic feats which included the Dean Prize for the best all round performance at the degree level, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba Prize to the best overall graduating student in the Faculty of Law, and Abu Bakri Shonibare Memorial Prize to the best overall graduating student in Faculty of Law.
Telling Muse.ng her plan for the future, she said she looks forward to completing law school and being called to the Nigerian Bar.
In her words: “I also look forward to being a badass lawyer. I want to work on complex transactions across industries, and use my knowledge of the law to solve problems creatively.
“I’m also passionate about volunteering and making impact, so I look forward to doing more in that regard and contributing to the overall development of my society.”
